The Gist
When gentle-mannered Fionnan (Hugh O’Conor) gets a little too caught up in his wedding plans, it’s up to best man Davin (Andrew Scott) to organise a stag weekend. The gentle hiking retreat to the mountains turns chaotic when Bride to be Ruth insists that her brother ‘the machine’ is invited on the boy’s trip.
Review
It’s a laid back take on the generally overdone, clichéd stag-weekend-gone-wrong comedy and is startlingly emotional. A lovely twist established from the beginning, results in a warm and entertaining tale about acceptance and the importance of friendship. Prepare yourself for some serious feelings as well as a good giggle.
We are also treated to a gorgeous hillside backdrop as well as a rather lovely soundtrack, including a beautiful and very Irish cover of ‘you are my sunshine’.
The Verdict
The gags are predictable gags and Andrew Scott sings for longer than is cinematically comfortable, but these are easily forgiven. Sadly the script fails to bring full potential to the predicaments the boys find themselves in. There is also a slightly cheesy ending where things get a little too patriotic.
