Get To Grips With Your Movie Night Mood

By Victoria Myerscough @thebookthefilm · On September 4, 2019

The evening’s free, you’ve ordered a takeaway, you’re in your sweatpants ready to veg out on the sofa – but wait! You haven’t picked anything to watch because you can’t think of anything that fits your current mood.

We’ve all been there. Consistency of our feelings is best so that you can choose the genres that you’re happy with that you know you’re going to have a good time watching. But when that phase comes, where you’re feeling off, or a bit different than usual, you start drifting through your Amazon Prime and Netflix collection like a Nissan S15, sliding through all your options, and each and everyone is a hard no. So what do you do? Do you turn the TV off, and sit in silence? Absolutely not. You power through your struggle and persist to find something to pique your interest. Without further adieu, here are a few ways to ride with your current funk and pick something to watch.

Trailers

Get your phone out and scroll through Youtube to take a peek at a few trailers. A snapshot of a film or series will either give you that yes feeling or make you feel dead. Watch a few, so that you have some to compare. From Romeo And Juliet, Inside Out to The Godfather, experiment with a few themes to get the gist of what kind of movie you’re in the mood for watching. It’s a quick alternative to starting a film and then stopping it midway when you realize you hate your choice and now you need to start a new one. Ah! The frustration.

Ask A Friend

When you just can’t think, or remember that film that you’ve always wanted to see, but always forget about moments later, chances are you’ve probably mentioned it to your pal one too many times. And if not, well they probably have a different take on what they like to watch, and they could give you some friendly guidance on films that you wouldn’t usually have considered. Like Superbad, American Sniper or Mamma Mia. So put your faith in your friends for once and ask them to throw you a bone.

Go Rogue

Sometimes stubbornness can get in the way of you watching something awesome. A trailer that’s not ticking the boxes for you or a story that doesn’t seem like your kind of thing means you are more than likely missing out on a lot of great films. So why not go rogue, and choose something you would never ever watch now. You never know, nostalgia from watching Disneys Dumbo or the Lion King might just be what you need.

Movie Generator

If your friends are too busy doing things other than thinking about what movie you should watch (how dare they have a life) and you can’t seem to step away from your classic taste for a sci-fi thriller, or dance-off films, maybe it’s time to put your fate in the hands of a movie generator.

And if all else fails, can anything really beat an action film like John Wick? It’s gripping, got humour, feel-good factor, and sad moments too. It’s a cocktail of emotion in a movie, you really can’t lose with this film.
