Pandorica Feature – 10 Original Sci-fi Films Coming in 2016

By Victoria Myerscough @thebookthefilm · On March 28, 2016

Sci-fi is a perennial film-favourite but recent hits like Moon, Guardians of the Galaxy and Ex Machina hinted that we might be entering a golden period of fresh and original sci-fi and fantasy film-making. With homegrown mini-epic Pandorica soon to hit screens, we look at 10 futuristic movies coming to screens in 2016…

Pandorica (April 2016)

Homegrown British sci-fi thriller Pandorica tells the story of the leadership trials of the Varosha Tribe in a near post-apocalyptic future. We follow three tribe members as they battle it out to decide who will lead the next generation of their people.

Criminal (April 2016)

Kevin Costner, Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones and Woman Woman Gal Gadot all star in this future-London action-thriller. We follow a former convict who is implanted with the memories of a dead CIA agent in order to finish a job.

400 Days (May 2016)

This space exploration sci-fi thriller stars Superman Returns Brandon Routh alongside DC faves Caity Lotz (Arrow) and Tom Cavanagh (The Flash). Inner demons begin to manifest themselves for four would-be astronauts isolated underground in this psychological genre piece.

Spectral (August 2016)

This sci-fantasy tells the story of a special-ops team sent to battle dark forces and supernatural entities which have been unleashed. Bandied as a “Supernatural Black Hawk Down”, Spectral features Emily Mortimer and World War Z star James Badge Dale.

Replicas (September 2016)

Featuring Keanu Reeves fresh off thriller Exposed and filming John Wick 2, Replicas tells the story of a neuroscientist who loses his family in a tragic accident. We follow his single-minded mission to bring them back no matter the cost.

Cell (TBC 2016)

Buzz is building on this fresh take on the zombie movie. Cell is based on horror legend Stephen King’s 2006 novel which he dedicated to George Romero. In the film John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson must find safety after a mysterious cell phone pulse turns people crazed.

Rupture (TBC 2016)

Featuring Prometheus star Noomi Rapace, this sci-fi thriller sees a young mother under secret observation and eventually kidnapped for seemingly nefarious purposes – slowly we learn to what end. Rupture is directed and co-written by Secretary director Steven Shaineberg.

What Happened to Monday? (TBC 2016)

Noomi Rapace again, this time starring alongside Hollywood stalwart Willem Defoe in a dystopian depiction of a global one-child policy in the not-too-distant future. With issues such as overpopulation, pollution and resources an ever-relevant topic, this should make for topical if uncomfortable viewing.

Last Broken Darkness (TBC 2016)

Post-apocalyptic sci-fi action alert! Last Broken Darkness depicts a world scorched, scarred and dangerous with most of humanity wiped out after a devastating meteor shower. A group of survivors with establish a community underground but need to face a new threat which has the potential to destroy humanity forever.

SFv1 (TBC 2016)

This Australian production stars Kellan Lutz (Twilight) and Isabel Lucas(Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) in a far future depiction of interplanetary colonization. In SFv1 a drifter must team up with a military contractor to find his daughter until an crisis caused by the contractor’s company forces the three to escape to safety.
