The Gist
Those pesky kids are back gassing it up, running amok taking on the superhero mantra this time around.
The Review
So after some concerning push backs on the final release date, TFBW is here and…it’s exactly what you’d expect from the likes of Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Bringing the game onto the next generation should have meant this one would be bigger. It is in some aspects. Bigger fights, more animations, the streets of South Park themselves are even bigger than last time around and yet, something’s lacking.
The story itself is more, dare I say grounded this time around. If you saw this year’s tenth episode, that’s exactly how this game starts. Cartman and co want to start their own superhero movie franchise and all goes farts up, alliances are broken, cats go missing, the kids must visit a strip joint and find who is the mastermind behind the rising crime in SP.
Your character is New Kid the silent protagonist with the ability to fart on demand. Character customisation has been tweaked, the harder the chosen difficulty, the darker your character’s skin tone, costumes are just for looks not adding much to overall stats.
Gameplay is more or less the same as the first. The streets of South Park are free to roam once you unlocked them. Random fights occur depending who attacks first or you can run away. The fighting system has been upgraded for the better.Turn-based attacks are still there but this time characters can move and be placed in different positions which can give you an advantage. Or completely F you up but still it’s fun as hell, maybe even better than the first in terms of gameplay.
This is the game’s strong point but I can’t help but feel it lacks somehow. There are some variations to the battles, adding objectives during battle and such but the enemies kind of lacked. Or maybe they didn’t have much staying power. In Stick of Truth, enemies ranged from the kids to downright nazi zombies. Here you get some over the top characters but not as much. Maybe it’s for the DLC but I dunno, on a console this big they could have taken this much further.
Graphics and game design are slightly better but there have been some bugs here and there. Characters getting caught between blocks during battle or a character animation attack not loading, seriously I had to wait then restart the game. Voice acting and sound effects though are top notch. Like any good episode, I laughed, then questioned if it was good to laugh, continued laughing and so on.
The Verdict
Flawed but still fun as hell. Outrageous and offensive but what more did you expect?
