The Gist:
A hit-man is taking out Gotham’s councilmen in order to influence the outcome of who will inherit Arkham. Fish Mooney is also having tryouts to build her secret weapon while Cobblepot begins to rise through Maroni’s ranks.
The Review:
Make no mistake, this episode is dominated by the villains. There are lengthy Nolan-esque expositions about who will do what with Arkham, the mad-house which will house the villains later…or not. Gordon and Bullock on the other hand are sidelined with not much to do except look for the killer who is offing the cities’ councilmen.
The episode started off well with Gladwell executing his targets with a telescope spike thingy but the detective duo deduce and find out who he is a bit too easy. As I said, the episode is more about the villains. As usual, Penguin is the standout here even when he’s washing dishes. After an attack on Maroni’s restaurant he gains Maroni’s trust.
Then there’s Pinkett Smith’s Fish who in this episode is channelling Heath Ledger’s Joker with her tryouts. It isn’t exactly said what she is planning but no doubt it will be revealed next episode.
As we have come to expect there’s a lot of foreshadowing and all that. Here we get young Bruce sharpening his detective skills by meticulously going through the Wayne archives in order to piece together the conspiracy as to who killed his parents. Personally, I want more scenes with Bruce and Alfred and since the show has been expanded to twenty two episodes, I’m pretty sure they will.
The Verdict:
The weakest episode yet but not without its fun factors. Penguin is always fun especially when his plans are being revealed. Gordon was the last character to be developed but this episode was dedicated to the villains. A near hit, but could have been better.
