The Review:
The Balloonman appears to be a new character brought up by the writers, that or I missed that issue. Not necessarily a bad thing but this, this is what will influence Bruce to become Batman? At the beginning when Penguin steps off the bus having returned to Gotham, we are given a montage into this crime ridden city. Seems to me this city needs more than taking care of a few corrupt officials to get it back on track.
However, there is something darkly comic about how The Balloonman dispenses his victims by handcuffing or anklecuffing(?) them to giant weather balloons. It’s also funny how Gordon and Bullock are oblivious to the fact that sooner or later these hapless victims will come crashing down. The old lady scene had me in stitches. Same goes for Bullock being tossed around by a woman.
Also in this episode we are introduced to mob boss Maroni played by Dexter’s David Zayas, a far departure from his cuddly Angel Batista. Cobblepot gets a job as a dishwasher at his restaurants as he puts forth his big plan.
The Verdict:
As usual the high-points are the scenes between Gordon and Bullock as they bicker about their different ideals. The central antagonist won’t really go down as one of Batman’s rogues gallery but it was a nice departure from all the winks and hints from previous episodes even though it fell flat at times.
