The assembled masses at this year’s San Diego Comic got a bit of a surprise this year when, instead of announcing the green lighting of a second Superman movie, they threw another superhero into the mix. Zack Snyder announced that the Man of Steel’s next outing would be a Batman V Superman due for release in 2015. The timing of the move is a bit peculiar. Batman has only just hung up his cape again after a franchise rescuing trilogy from Christopher Nolan, and Man of Steel is still playing in some cinemas. Having raked in upwards of $600 million at the box office, could Warner Brothers be disappointed with this? After all, it was no Avengers. Man of Steel was hardly a commercial or critical failure. Sure, there were some teething problems but Snyder set us up perfectly for a sequel. The whole Batman V Superman thing seems to have been thrown together last minute, not like the detailed plotting taking place in the Marvel universe. We don’t even know who would be playing the Caped Crusader. Early chatter has thrown up the names of Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Matt Bomer but it’s difficult to see past Bale at the moment. He’s already confirmed that he won’t be reprising his role. Who will be the villain in a future match up? Clearly they’re going to have to bury the hatchet before any Justice League movie can happen. Here at The Book, The Film, The T-Shirt, we hope that Snyder can pull this off. But for the moment, we’re sceptical.
